This year’s led steer competition was judged by Ray White Rural Livestock Sales Manager, Tim Bayliss, Dorrigo, NSW.

The champion light domestic steer on hoof was won by a Limousin led by Keely Liebich from Coomandook Area School and bred by the Evans Family’s Roean stud at Upper Sturt. Roean Lambo weighed 405kg and had 7mm rump and 7mm rib fat and a 87sq cm EMA.

“It’s got the length, and it’s got the cover and it’s got the width about it,” Mr Bayliss said.

Lewis Bruggemann, Glental partnership, Mallala, won champion export steer with a Limousin. Glental Bowman weighed 580kg and had 9mm rump and 7mm rib fat and 105 sq cm EMA. Mr Bayliss said he was impressed with the cover on its rib. “It’s also got really good expression of muscle,” he said. “This steer just stands out in a line. It’s got a huge amount of eye muscle, a lot of shape and condition, and good coverage.”

Reserve Champion export steer went to a Limousin led by Lucy Zilm from Faith Lutheran Secondary School, Tanunda, and bred by Sandra Keatley’s Pebbly Range stud. Pebbly Range Pete weighed 550kg and had 9mm rump and 7mm rib fat and 95 sq cm EMA.

Mr Bayliss said it was hard to select export champions. “It’s a good thing when I’m struggling to select a champion, it’s a credit to the breeders and the quality of the showing,” he said.
