In just his second year of showing cattle, 16-year-old Jase Lamborn has been awarded the highly regarded Jean Plaisted Memorial for the Limousin Society’s herdsperson competition.

The competition was run over the three days of the Queensland Limousin Youth Camp held in Pittsworth on September 25-27, which attracted over 100 participants from five states.

Competitors in the herdsperson competition are not only scored on their parading and judging ability, but their overall conduct in and around the sheds and show ring, their participation, involvement and sportsmanship.

Originally from Mt Isa, Jase moved to Toowoomba several years ago and started school at Downlands College. Having worked on stations up north before the move, Jase took an interest in the school’s agricultural department and from there picked up the show leads for the first time.

He says showing could be a possible career choice for him, or it could at least lead to other opportunities within the industry.

“I think the skills are something I can definitely use later on in life,” Jase said.

“What I have learnt over the past two years could be used to advertise my own cattle in the future. Hopefully one day I will go back to working on a station, and the ultimate dream is to own my own place.”

Jase has been fortunate to attend a number of shows around the circuit with the Downlands team, and it was at one of these shows that he saw the poster for the Limousin Youth Camp.

“I had some friends in the show business who were going, so I thought I would go as well. It was a very good weekend; the camp was very educational,” Jase said.

“I didn’t expect to win the herdsperson competition. It was a bit of a shock, but it’s also an honour.”

Jase has been competing in the junior judges and paraders competition whilst showing cattle, and he says he likes the parading a lot more.

“I get a bit nervous when it comes to the judging competition, but I know it’s the more important one. If I don’t get a full time job next year on a property, then I hope to keep on showing and continue to compete in these competitions.” .
