A Fish Out Of Water
Recent research has shown that lean red meat can be just as important as fish
in providing the important Omega-3 fatty acids in our national diet.
Dr Neil Mann of RMIT University in Victoria has found that Omega-3 fatty acids
are present in some red meat in similar quantities to that found in some Australian
white fish.
The leaner the meat the higher the content of these acids according to Dr Mann.
Dr Mann said his results were consistent with current dietary guidelines which
recommend that lean red meat be consumed three or four times a week for its
health benefits.
Omega-3 fatty acids are important for brain development and function and for
reducing heart disease.
Research by Professor Peter Howe of the School of Health Sciences at the University
of Adelaide has produced similar findings.
Applying new data on fatty acid content of lean beef, lamb, veal and mutton
to existing information on dietary intake, Professor Howe found that beef and
lamb alone contributed more than one quarter of Australians intake of Omega-3
acids.
The research was funded by Meat and Livestock Australia and the results widely
circulated to the rural press and women's magazines.
Now if that is not good news for Limousin and red meat then I don't know what
is!
