The
newsletter is early this week as I will be attending the Homestation Complete
Female Dispersal Sale tomorrow. Note
that two additional female lots 185 and 186 have been added to the Homestation
catalogue. Three semen lots for the
widely used herd sires Tanhill Gaffer, Tanhill Geyser and Hurdle Park Marquis
have also been added as lots 190, 191 and 192.
I look forward to a strong sale for Tony and Jill Whistler's very well
known herd.
Don't
forget the meeting to discuss future National Show and Sales at the Blazing
Stump Hotel, Wodonga at 9.00 am this Saturday.
Strong competition from the southern states pushed
the Talana "Heart of the Herd" Sale to an excellent gross of $187,150
for 49 lots. Cows with calves at foot
topped at $8,000 and averaged $4,028 and cows mostly in calf topped at $10,000
and averaged $3,190.
The top priced cow Talana Shiraz, a Refstrup
Tabias daughter in calf to either Ionesco or Talana Vesuvius was purchased by
Greg and Chris Bell of the Kandu Limousin Stud at Wondai, Qld. The Bells purchased four cows for an average
of $5,875.
Second top priced cow at $8,000 was Talana
Sapphire, a Hammel Buffalo daughter with a Talana Vesuvius bull calf at foot
and purchased by David and Alison Galpin of the Warrawindi Stud at Penola in
South Australia. The Galpins purchased
two females for an average of $5,375.
Next best price was $7,000 for Talana Ugenie,
another Hammel Buffalo daughter with a Talana Whirlwind heifer calf at foot
which sold to Stephen and Laurice Hope of the Shamar Park Stud at Tongala in
Victoria.
Volume buyers were Ron and Liz Menz of the
Meranook Limousin Stud at Barongarook in Victoria who took home nine females to
a top of $3,500 and an average of $2,750.
Other volume buyers were Alwyn and Faye Wolff of Federation Limousins at
Goomburra, Qld, who bought seven females to a top of $4,250 and an average of
$2,857.
Two bulls were offered. The 18-month-old Talana Zenith by Ionesco
which sold for $14,000 to David and Alison Galpin and the rising six year-old
sire Talana Vesuvius which sold after the sale for $6,000 to Greg and Joan
Stevens of Stevens Limousins at Birriwa, NSW.
Demand was also strong for genetic
packages. A flush by Dauphin from
Talana Sapphire sold for $7,500 to Ron and Jodie Dowton of Brogo Vale Limousins
at Bega, NSW who also purchased the four Hammel Garder/Talana Tempest embryos
at $800 each.
The next series of BREEDPLAN workshops will
take place in South Australia and Victoria in early July. The first is at AMMI Stadium in Adelaide on
Monday 3rd July followed by one in the Naracoorte Town Hall on
Thursday 6th July and then the DPI offices in Hamilton, Victoria on
Monday 10th July.
Andrew Byrne, Benita Davis and I will be
presenting the workshops and also visiting a number of BREEDPLAN herds in the
days between the workshops.
Feedback from the first four workshops has been
very positive from both experienced "Breedplanners" and some who are
not yet BREEDPLAN members.
The "early bird" rate of $90 is still
available for the Naracoorte and Hamilton workshops but even at the "last
minute" rate of $110 is very good value for a comprehensive workshop. Bookings can be made on the booking form on
the website http://sbts.une.edu.au or by
emailing to office@sbts.une.edu.au.
The
fourteen year-old cow Bon Boef Ethel 7 cleaned up again at the Springsure Show
in Qld. She won Senior Champion Cow and
Grand Champion Female in the Bos Taurus section for her owner Susan Walters
(nee Ole), Minnamurra Stud. Minnamurra
Zena was the Reserve Junior Champion at Springsure.
At
the Emerald Show Bon Boef Ethel 7 won Senior Champion Bos Taurus female and
Minnamurra Zena took out Junior Champion and Grand Champion Bos Taurus
female. Susan informs me that Bon Boef
Ethel 7 has now been gracefully retired from the show ring (not before time)!
In
the 9th June Newsletter I reported that two Jockey sired heifers
topped the sale at $4,000 and $3,000 respectively which were the prices I
obtained form the selling agents Elders.
Both the vendor Tony Zeller and the purchaser Geoff Haack have since
informed me that the selling price of the second heifer was $4,250 and this has
been notified to the selling agents.
The
2006 Southern NSW Limousin Breeders' Sale will be held at Moss Vale on the 9th
September. Members wishing to nominate
registered animals for the sale can obtain a copy of the Terms and Conditions
by contacting Glyn Williams on 0418 975 343 or by email to awre@bigpond.com as soon as possible. There will also be a high Limousin content
commercial section organised by the selling agents Jim Hindmarsh & Co,
Landmark Moss Vale and Elders Moss Vale.
A
reminder that our Meeting will be held on the 25th June at Ray and
Christine Vlietstra’s home at 26 Spoonbill Pl Albion Rail at 11.00 am. BYO BBQ lunch follows. Phone Ray on 4257 1206 / 0413 112 400 for
directions or Glyn Williams 6227 5754 / 0418 975 343. All members of the APG are most warmly encouraged to attend.
The
new EBVs should be on the web this weekend.
The only way you will know is to check the EBVs for an animal which has
not previously had EBVs e.g. your late 2005 or early 2006 born calves.
The
catalogue for the Northern NSW Breeders' Sale at Scone with 60 bulls and 11
females is now on the web.
Yours in Limousin
