Newsletter
for the week ending 20th May 2005
I recently came across a Meat and Livestock Australia
publication which targets nutrition professionals. It contains a very interesting article written by Dr Neil Mann,
Associate Professor of Human Nutrition in the school of Applied Sciences at
RMIT University in Melbourne Vic.
A few quotes follow-
"Evolution can't keep up with our rapidly changing food
supply. Our ancient genome is colliding
with modern food technology and the result is diet related disease."
"Nearly three quarters of the total daily energy
consumed in the modern diet is comprised of foods that were not part of the
pre- agricultural diet."
"The lower protein content (less that 15%) compared to
diets of hunter gatherers (19- 35%) has raised many questions"
"Studies have shown protein to be cardio- protective
though the mechanism is unclear"
Another article titled "Kid Power" says
"Parents can fight the mid- term slowdown in their children's
concentration and energy levels by providing three nutrient dense meals
including red meat three to four times per week."
The brochure is a very good example of the work MLA does
"behind the scenes" with the nutrition and medical professions to
promote lean red meat. If you would
like a copy drop me an email.
Response from South Eastern, Central West and Riverina APG
members to the proposed spring sale has been encouraging. To date we
have expressions of interest for some 17 led and unled registered bulls and 24
led and unled registered females. If any other members would like to
nominate animals please contact Glyn Williams on 02 6227 5754, fax 02 6226
8855 or email awre@bigpond.com.
Further entries would be most welcome as we believe there is a gap in the
Limousin Sale program across southern NSW that should be exploited and
even though many of us are currently in drought, we remain keen to
establish this sale on the annual calendar.

Gerry Muckert of
Brassal Meats in Ipswich and a breeder of commercial Limousin cattle won all 11
classes in the Ipswich Show Prime Cattle Competition. He also took out Grand Champion with a Limousin heifer (first
time ever a heifer has won Grand Champion), Reserve Champion, Champion
Butcher's Steer, Champion pen of Steers, Champion pen of Heifers, Junior
Champion and Champion Two Tooth.
All were pure
Limousin and Boyd Campbell, the owner of Highchester Processing Plant (and a
Charolais stud breeder) commented "the heifer is the best I have ever seen
and I have a lot of cattle."
At auction the
Grand Champion heifer sold for 250 c/kg live weight and Gerry Muckert averaged
233 c/kg for 33 head.
Wingham Beef Week Successes
In the all breeds
stud judging the Senior Champion Bull was Roma- Park Yulestar exhibited by Rob
and Adele Rule of My Place Limousins and the Reserve junior Champion Bull was
Roma- Park Yukon exhibited by Robert and Marilyn Bulley.
In the Hoof and
Hook Section Wingham High School took out the Reserve Champion on hoof with a
Limousin cross Angus.
Champion Carcass
went to Aberdeen High School with a Limousin cross Hereford and Reserve
Champion Carcass went to Camden Haven High School with a purebred Limousin.
This steer was sired by Roma- Park Polled Thunder, a polled French Pure bull
owned by Bob and Adele Rule.
Wingham High School
also won a number of other carcass awards in the unled section including
Champion Pen of Two Carcasses and Single Unled Carcass. All Wingham steers were sired by Roma- Park
Toledo.
Moreton Sale Toppers
At a recent Moreton
weekly sale 15 pure Limousin steers bred by Kevin Franz easily topped the sale
at 195 c/kg liveweight.
On 11th
May a 955kg Limousin bull sold for $1.50 c/kg or $1,432 and a 730kg bull sold
for 153.8 c/kg or $1,122. That is a
pretty good trade in for the next Limousin bull.
Yours in Limousin,
Alex McDonald
