Limousin
did not snare their usual large haul of ribbons from the Brisbane Royal Carcase
Competition but there were some notable wins. Champion Medium Weight Carcase
was a Limousin X Shorthorn bred by the Grayson family of Killarney and prepared
by students from Warwick State High School. Reserve Medium Weight Carcase was a
Limousin exhibited by Neville Creighton and the Scofields from Casino.
I
omitted to mention last week that a high content Limousin exhibited by Graham
Bell from Pine Mountain, Qld was awarded the Champion Trade steer in the Prime
Cattle Competition. The 468 kg steer later made the highest price at the Prime
Cattle sale selling to Killarney Feedlot for 345 c/kg liveweight to return
$1,615. Other good sales included Eddie Nolan's Grand Champion steer which
weighed 696 kg and made 305 c/kg or $2,122 selling to the Fox Hotel in South
Brisbane.
The
Nolan family's Grand Champion pen of the show, six steers averaging 583 kg sold
for 250 c/kg or $1,457.50 to Australia Meat Holdings.
The
Reserve Champion single steer from the Crawford family at Kingaroy weighing 583
kg made 280 c/kg or $1,632 and Don and Sarah Riley's Reserve Champion pen of
six weighing 468 kg made 280 c/kg or $1,310.
The
issue of polledness has been a controversial one in France. However I read with interest that the KBS Genetics
Prestige Sale to be held on 8th September includes a polled bull
bred in France. I think this will be
the first polled bull to be offered for sale in France.
David
and Leonie Washband believe they have the only Limousin bull in the world which
is homozygous for the four gene markers for tenderness currently available in
Australia. The young bull Tarampa Downs
Australia is a home bred bull which was shown at the Ekka.
The Sydney Royal led steer
show has always been restricted to purebred steers. It was announced this week
that they will have separate classes for crossbred steers in the 2007 Sydney
Royal. The crossbred steers will be judged two days before the purebred steers
and then sold on a trade price grid. It is a step forward but still behind the
other Royals which let the crossbreds compete head to head with the purebreds.
Kirsty
Hamson's Wild Media have made a decision not to continue preparing and publishing
Limousin Australia. Until new arrangements are made all enquiries for
advertising and editorial should be directed to the ALBS office.
Anthony
Attard of Londonderry recently sold a 495 kg black Limousin steer for 240.2
c/kg or $1,189 at Camden sale yards. John and Rose Debrincat of Londonderry
this week sold two Limousin heifers 345 kg @ 254 c/kg or $876 at the same
yards.
The
Camden sale is conducted by William Inglis and their agent Rick Harris reported
another very good sale to The Land this week. Valton Campbell sold 23 lot fed
Limousin X steers weighing 388 kg for 242 c/kg or $940.61.
Yours in Limousin
