Final ILC Bookings

The WA pretour commences on Wednesday next week with a group of 21 mainly overseas visitors.  I am sure they will appreciate the warm Western Australian hospitality and see some good Limousin cattle and great scenery.

We have had a good response from Australians wanting to attend individual core conference events.  There are a few places left at most events.  If you want to be part of this exciting event and have not booked yet please call ANF Agritours on 02 6772 9066.

Argentina Closes Exports

The Argentine Government has announced the suspension of beef exports for 180 days in an effort to reduce local cattle prices.  This quite drastic move to reduce beef costs to local consumers was sparked by a sharp rise in cattle prices last week.  Average prices at Argentina's principal market in Buenos Aires rose 16% last week to the equivalent of $1.30 Aust. per kg live weight.

Argentinian beef producers are understandably "not happy".  Argentina has 54 million cattle and last year exported 190,000 tonnes of fresh beef to Russia, 58,000 tonnes to Chile, 24,000 tonnes to Israel and 40,000 tonnes to the European Union.

The main impact on Australia is likely to be increased demand from the US and Canada as some Uruguayan beef exports are diverted from the US to Chile and other markets previously supplied by Argentina.

Steers for Melbourne

Longeronong Agricultural College near Horsham in Victoria have been successful steer exhibitors at Melbourne Show over many years – but always with Charolais.  They are keen to get a couple of Limousin steers to prepare for the next Melbourne Royal.  If you have any steers which might be suitable please let me know.

Can you Help?

Dear Limousin Breeder,

I am a French student in BTS ACSE Vocational Training Certificate in Agriculture (Farming Systems Analysis and Managing) in Levier Agriculture School in Franche-Comte (France).  I am 23.

During my first year I have to do a training for 6 weeks and I would like to do it in a foreign country, and I chose Australia.  I would like to leave with a school mate (she's 18).  My friend and me are interested in animals, more particularly cows, as it is what we have in France (we both have parents owning a farm with Montbeliardes).  But I think that the interest would be to discover something else at another scale, in order to compare with France, where farms area is quite modest.

I'm writing to know if it is possible to carry out this training in your farm during end of June/July and beginning of August 2006, and if possible to welcome two students.  We would be happy to work for you and we don't ask for money.

Moreover, I'd like to improve my English (I've spent 1 year in Wales).

Please can you give me an answer quickly (within 1 week) as I'm very late in my research.

If you are not interested, maybe at least you would know someone who is interested in my request.

I look forward to hearing from you quickly and I thank you for your cooperation.

Yours faithfully

Elodie Dornier
