Prize money of $5,500 attracted a strong field
to the Led Steer and Heifer Spectacular at the Toogoolawah Show last weekend.
Grand Champion steer selected by Gympie meat
processor and wholesaler, Terry Nolan, was a 638 kg Limousin X Murray
Grey/Brahman exhibited by James McUtchen which previously won the Toowoomba
Royal Show competition. Reserve
Champion steer was a pure Limousin steer exhibited by Neil Goetsch from Kalbar,
Qld.
Champion milk tooth steer under 400 kg prepared
and exhibited by a school or college was a 339 kg Limousin cross from the
Australian Agricultural College's Dalby Campus. This steer would have been in
the group shown to international visitors on the ILC Post Tour to Queensland
during their visit to Dalby College.
The milk tooth steer over 400 kg was also a
Limousin cross shown by Pittsworth High School.
A Limousin X Hereford steer shown by Paul and
Karen Foreman won the milk tooth under 350 kg class and a Murray Grey X
Limousin bred by R & E Dull was Champion in the 351 kg to 420 kg class.
Many of these steers are likely to go to the
Brisbane RNA competition.
A milk tooth purebred Limousin steer exhibited
by Wilga Kummerow, Taronga, Mt Tyson, won the Supreme Champion award at the
Rabobank Prime Beef Challenge at Farmfest.
Judge Michael McGovern, AMH, Oakey, said quality, condition and youth
were his main requirements when he selected the 576 kg beast for the top award. The steer, which was on feed for 100 days,
was specifically aimed towards the Farmfest competition and won the section for
a single grainfed steer not exceeding 600 kg for the Japanese chiller trade,
before winning the top prize.
Pittsworth buyer Tony Gorring later bought the steer for 210 c/kg.
Mrs Kummerow also took out weight classes 2, 3,
7 and 8 with Limousin steers.

The second of a run of female sales is on
tomorrow with Talana Limousins offering 56 lots. The Homestation Complete Female Dispersal Sale with 185 lots next
Friday and the Donna Valley Christmas in July Sale is on 7th July
with 50 lots. There has been strong
interest in all three sales on the ALBS website.
The mid-year Limousin BREEDPLAN analysis is
expected to run next week. Updated EBVs
should be posted to the web by the following weekend and all participating
herds will receive updated herd reports soon after. A change that has been made to this analysis is that the
heritability of docility has been increased from 0.27 to 0.35 as a result of a
recalculation of the heritability for docility from our large and increasing
bank of docility scores.
This change will mean that the actual docility
score of an animal compared to the average score for the contemporary group
will have a larger effect on the EBV compared to the influence of the sire and
dam's EBV. It will also put a larger
spread on docility EBVs with low accuracies and is likely to increase the
genetic trend a little. Be prepared for
some changes in docility EBVs of your animals.
