I
have just returned from Brisbane Exhibition (Royal Qld Show) where I watched
Limousin and Limousin cross cattle compete in the biggest led steer competition
in Australia and the Prime Cattle Competition with almost 400 head shown as
singles and pens of three and six.
Grand Champion led steer was not a Limousin but a lot of the other
winners were.
In
the Junior led steers competition, St Johns College from Dubbo took out the
medium weight class and Champion Junior led steer with a Limousin X
Shorthorn. Second in this class was a
Limousin X Angus shown by Tim O'Dwyer of Roachvale, Qld. The winner of the Junior Heavy weight class
and Reserve Champion was a Limousin X shown by Wayne Goetsch of Kalbar. Third in this class was a Limousin X Angus
shown by the Dalby Campus of Australian Agriculture College.
In
the open classes six of the nine classes were won by Limousin and Limousin X
cattle, which also took out four of the six broad ribbons. Class 3 was won by a Limousin X Murray Grey
shown by Don and Sarah Riley. This steer
went on to be the Reserve Champion Light Weight steer. Class 4 winner was a purebred Limousin
exhibited by Ross and Val Roe and Knox and Alexander from Coonabarabran, and
the Class 6 winner was a Limousin X Murray Grey shown by Alan Badior together
with Knox and Alexander. The Class 4 winner
was also the Reserve Champion Medium Weight steer. Class 7 winner was a Limousin X Charolais exhibited by A and ED
Love of Boonah and went on to be the Reserve Champion Heavy Weight steer. Geoff and Bronwyn Nielsen of Warregah
Limousins at Tamworth showed the winner of Class 8, a purebred Limousin and
Dalby Campus of AAC won Class 9 with a black purebred Limousin. This steer went on to take out the Heavy
Weight Championship.
In
the live judging section of the Ken McDonald Shield for three purebred steers
Limousins currently stand second just one point behind the Charolais team. The team included the winner of Class 4 from
Roe, Knox and Alexander, a steer from Wilsonton Agricultural College and the
winner of Class 8 from Geoff and Bronwyn Nielsen. Carcase results from these steers will be available next week.
Don
and Sarah Riley from Duri, NSW held the record price for an Ekka Show steer of
$17.40 per kg dressed weight for about 20 minutes on Wednesday (it was topped
by the price paid for the Grand Champion steer during the sale) Estimated to dress at 235 kg the Limousin X
Murray Grey steer will return a bit over $4,000.
The
Prime Cattle Competition is the only one of its type held at a Royal Show and
attracted just under 400 entries as singles and pens. Most are grain finished.
Class
20 for a steer 360 to 480 kg liveweight was won by Graham Bell with a purebred
Limousin. Class 21 for a steer 481 to
600 kg was won by AG, VC and JA Crawford with a Limousin X and Class 22 for
steers 621 to 700 kg was won by a Limousin X Droughtmaster from Eddie Nolan of
Moonie. The Nolan steer went on to be
the Champion single steer and the Crawford steer was the Reserve Champion.
In
the pens of three competition Drynan and Lord won Class 24 with Limousin X steers. Don and Sarah Riley in association with
Rogers Creek Feedlot won Class 25 with a pen of six Limousin X Murray Grey
steers in the 360 – 480 kg weight range.
Eddie Nolan took out the pen of six steers 481 to 600 kg with a pen of
Limousin X Droughtmaster steers. This
pen went on to take the Champion Pen of steers with the Riley/Rogers entry
taking out Reserve Champion pen.
All
in all an outstanding result for Limousin in a very commercially oriented
competition judged by buyers from prominent industry players, Stockyard and
Kilcoy Abattoirs.
An excellent display of stud
Limousins was judged on Thursday morning with both the Grand Champion bull and
Grand Champion female going to John and Rosemaree McCarthy's Rosehill Limousin
stud. Detailed results next week.
