It was reported this week that the East
Gippsland region of Victoria is having the best season for many years. President Max Atkins also had 125 mm of rain
at his property near Nowra last week.
But this is in stark contrast to most of the rest of Australia which are
in drought again with complete lack of rain over the last two months.
Long range weather forecaster Hayden Walker has
forecast "moderate to reasonably good rains for most areas of NSW during
July". I hope he is right!
While the dry conditions have put pressure on
cattle prices they are holding up remarkably well. The Eastern Young Cattle Indicator EYCI was down by 10 cents last
week to close at 341 c/kg which is 20 cents higher than the corresponding
figures last year.
To quote Stuart Sheldrake from William Inglis
at Camden, NSW from this week's The Land.
"Regardless of any change in the rain patterns it looks almost
certain that trade cattle, in particular, will sell to extremely strong demand
due to a shortage of prime cattle at suitable weights in the next two to three
months. An example of this was at
Tuesday's Camden market, where prime lot fed Limousin cross cattle sold to
exceptional competition, with the tops, at 415 kg, selling for 264.2 c/kg or
$1096."

The single Limousin stud entered in the
Northern NSW Beef Week which runs from 19th to 26th June
is the Miri Limousin Stud at Manilla.
Owner Nick Schoulal has already had enquiry from intending visitors and
has invited Limousin members to visit "Fairmount" and see his
relatively new stud on Wednesday 21st June.
All members and particularly intending vendors
are invited to participate in a meeting to discuss a possible change of date
and an upgraded format for the 2007 National Show and Sale. The meeting will be at 9.00 am on Saturday
24th June at the Blazing Stump Motel, Talllangatta Road,
Wodonga. The results of a survey of
vendors at the last five National Sales has been sent to those vendors.
This is a very important meeting and it is
important that intending vendors attend the meeting.
Two
Limousin heifers sired by Jockey topped what was a very tough multi-breed sale
at Farmfest near Toowoomba in Qld.
Both
heifers were offered by Tony Zeller of Braeside Limousins with the top priced
heifer selling to Crystal Park Limousins at Currumbin Valley for $4,000 and the
other heifer selling for $3,000 to Benamitchy Limousins at Gilston.
Anthony Graham emailed the following message with regard to
the upcoming Talana Female Sale.
"For those people travelling to Kingaroy the sale cattle will be
available for inspection on Friday afternoon.
If people let us know they are in the area we will organise a get
together and meal for everybody that night.
Also, I can email or fax the supplementary sheet to interested parties
following pregnancy testing on Monday 12th June. My number is 07 4635 6126 and my email is anthony@talana.com.au."

Glenda Tomlinson at Albany, WA this week made 137.5 c/kg or $861. They sold another eight cows (classified as
cows) for 131.5 c/kg or $844. Three
Gelbvieh X Murray Grey cows sold by the Tomlinsons at the same sale made 120.5
