NATIONAL SHOW AND SALE 2007 UPDATE

The forum of interested Limousin breeders that was conducted at the Black Stump in Wodonga after the Homestation sale was a very good meeting with several ideas discussed at length. The survey results from previous vendors at the National along with emails were also discussed.

The National will stay in its current form and at the same time of the year for 2007 and 2008. This could possibly change if the Angus were to go to a Spring sale. The 2007 National will be held on 26th and 27th April.

A number of recommendations from the meeting will be considered at the next Board Meeting in November.

We would like to promote the unled section of our sale with both males and females to attract a bigger field of commercial buyers. By doing this we would hope to persuade those members who have sold in the Atkins sale over the last couple of years to sell at the National.

We will be looking at the entry fee for the National with the possibility of a sliding scale depending on the number of cattle an exhibitor enters.

Unled cattle will still have to pass the same criteria as the led cattle. Provisions are available for us to pen the unleds inside the pavilion.

We will be tightening up the Conditions of Sale so that Dr Reon Holmes will have the final say on whether entries are considered structurally sound.

The Limousin Youth part of the National was also discussed and it was felt that we were running this program for schools and not our Limousin youth. There is talk of a junior camp being held at a new complex in Tamworth that would be of greater value and if this were to take place then possibly there may be not youth activities at the National.

The led steer competition got very little support.

There was discussion in relation to the selling of passed in cattle afterwards in the yards. Some sales have a rule which is supported by agents, and buyers are made fully aware that we will discuss and that is that any animal passed in would have $500 added to its passed in price if sold later in the yards. The vendor would benefit by $500.

To sell at the National the vendor has to be in the Limousin Assurance Program and have at least a Beef Only Johnes Disease status.

Final decisions in relation to above matters will be passed onto all members. I hope to see more unled cattle entered as well as let cattle.  Let's make it a great 2007.

Show and Sale Chairman, Wayne Churchill.

LIM-FLEX REQUIREMENTS

Some members have enquired about how to register Lim-Flex animals.  They can be registered using the normal ALBS grading system where a Limousin X Angus or an Angus X Limousin are registered as Grade 1 animals and a second cross of Limousin will produce Grade 2 animals.

If these Grade 1 and Grade 2 animals fit the specifications for Lim-Flex they are given a Lim-Flex suffix and can be marketed that way.

Grade 2 Lim-Flex females can be used to breed purebred Limousin females or Grade 3 Limousin bulls.  Crosses of breeds other than Angus can also be registered using the Limousin grading system.

A Breednote specifying the detailed requirements for Lim-Flex animals is available from the ALBS office.
