Newsletter for the week ending 3 February 2006

Nothing Stays the Same

The beef industry never stands still.  The USA regained entry to Japan but now they have been shut out again because some beef imported from the USA was found to have some spinal cord which is considered to be specified risk material.  No one is predicting how long this current ban will last.  While this may sound good for Australia this is concern that the re-banning of US beef will have an overall impact on beef consumption in Japan.

Canada last week announced another case of BSE but they are currently still free to export to Japan.

The Korean Government have also stated that the re-ban on the US will not impact on its decision to resume US beef imports but they will continue to closely monitor developments.

Despite the Japan incident Taiwan has announced a resumption of imports of boneless US beef from cattle less then 30 months of age effective immediately.

The impact of all this is in Australia is that cattle prices have generally increased by 10 to 20 cents/kg liveweight over the last week.

ILC Conference

Detailed itineraries and prices for individual events for the WA and SA/Vic pre-tours were emailed or posted to all members this week.  The Qld post-tour will go out on Monday.

Please note that the cost of the final dinner on Friday 7th April is inclusive of drinks.  It would be great to have a big role up of Australians to this event which will precede the biggest ever showing of Limousin cattle the next day.

Tamworth Feature Show

As a warm-up to Sydney Royal there will be a Limousin Feature Show on Friday 24th March with prizemoney of around $4,500.  There will be 14 classes each with $160 prizemoney as well as $200 for Champions, $300 for Grand Champions and $500 for Supreme Exhibit.

Entries close on 24th February and entry forms can be obtained by calling Don Riley on 02 6760 4238.

Please do Not Re-Register on the Web

More and more people are using the web to register their animals.  However, if you have made a mistake or need to submit a new NLIS number for a replaced tag do not try to do it by reregistering the same animal again.  Simply send an email to our Registrar Alison Stewart requesting the change on her email address: alison.stewart@abri.une.edu.au

Record Web Hits

January saw a record number of hits on our website which received 47,728 page hits from 493 different visitors.  This was over 50 percent more hits than for January 2005.
