It appears that the go ahead for the
importation of US beef from approved processors into Korea will occur on 7th
June. It is also anticipated that the
Japanese market may reopen to the US by mid to late July. It remains to be seen how quickly and how
much the US can regain market share in these countries but it will certainly
increase competition for Australian product into these two major markets.
In response to comments about Hormone Growth
Promotants (HGPs) in last week's newsletter Hayley Sheehan emailed in to remind me that
the use of HGPs is banned in Tasmania but Hayley did comment that a certain
amount of domestic beef comes into Tasmania from the mainland which may not be
from HGP free cattle. Tasmanian
consumers seem to be unaware or unconcerned that the beef they buy from their
supermarkets is not necessarily HGP free.
