News for the Week Ending 24 October 2003
Dalby Female Sale
The catalogue for the Dalby female sale on 7 November is on the Limousin website under Sale Catalogues. Printed catalogues are available from Coral Winning on 07 4663 1152. The female sale will be conducted by Grant Daniel and Long in the Dalby saleyards after a commercial Limousin cross store sale.
After the Limousin results in the Dalby Beef Galore reported below it should be a very strong sale. There are some very good genetics in the bloodlines of the females on offer and I am sure phone bidding could be arranged if you would like to bid remotely. GDL stud stock representative Gary Greer can be contacted on 0428 984942.

Strong semen sales.
Tim Keys reports that he sold out of a relatively small quantity of Ronick Iceman within a week of it becoming available. Sales of semen from Opera have also been good. Tim says he will be bringing in semen from another bull from the UK in the near future. The bull is Marquis, a French bull currently owned by Mr. & Mrs SD Hollingworth of Lockerbie.
In Tim's words "If my semen enquiries are any indication the breed is about to explode in Australia".
The demand for Ronick Iceman and Opera also show the value of advertising in Limousin Australia
30,000gns Top Price at Carlisle Limousin Sale
Limousin is the largest
breed in the UK and their sales conyinue to
be strong. The second highest price paid for a Limousin bull in the United Kingdom,30,000gns,
was the lead price in a strong day's trading at the British Limousin Cattle
Society's October bull sale at Borderway Market,Carlisle on Saturday 18th October.
A total of 129 bulls sold for an average of 3510 pounds ($8560 Aust) as
commercial breeders competed strongly with pedigree breeders the best bulls.

Late but Impressive
June Aurisch of Codrington in Vic reports that she topped the Warrnambool sale on 28 August with a 610 kg heifer which made 186c/kg or $1134.60.
On 24 July a cull Limousin bull from a commercial herd near Hamilton weighing 1015 kg made 156c/kg or $1583. Not a bad trade in price on the next Limo bull.
Money Making Matrons - That Did Not Make The Mark
At our Narraba Stud at Cobram Vic, we have reached the stage where we have a self replacing herd. As such, the matrons have to make way for the new girls on the block. So far this season we have sold two lots each of two cows. The first pair sold in February at Wodonga and topped the sale at 162.2 c/kg for a total of $2238.36. The second pair topped the sale at Shepparton on October 14 for an average of 162.13 c/kg for a total of $2245.44. The age of the cows ranged from 10 to 14 years.
We were fortunate to get four calves out of each of them over four years but none of those calves quite made the high standards we set for our seedstock program. Consequently, each season these calves became part of the group that were sold direct to local abattoir Vodusek Meats. The best of them sold to $780 but we estimate that the 16 vealers would have averaged $650 each. Adding up all of the sales we have $4483.80 for the four cows and $10,400 for the 16 calves giving a grand total of $14,883.80. Take away the original cost of the four cows at $4,400 and you have a gross profit (less expenses) of $10,483 or $2621 per cow over four years.
Not a bad result for matrons that "didn't quite make the mark". Is it any wonder we can't quite understand why there is not more commercial Limousin herds.

Wow!
Another outstanding sale of cull cows and heifers was for Matthew and Jenny Friend, Frog Hollow Limousin Stud at Black Mountain near Armidale NSW. Yesterday they sold a 695kg 6 year old Limousin cow for 179.2 c/kg or $1245. The next two cows weighing 657.5kg made 164.6 c/kg or $1082. Another 10 year old cow sold for $891. A two year old "W" heifer weighing 585kg made 174.6 c/kg or $1021.
A yearling heifer weighing 485kg sold for 167.6 c/kg or $894. All up the four pure Limousin cows and two Limousin heifers averaged $1022. Not bad for a bunch of culls. The word is to sell your cull cows now as exporters fill their US orders written when the dollar was around 64 cents. Cow prices are predicted to fall when the next contracts are written with the Australian dollar around 70 cents.
