“Limousin heifers sold for 224 and 226 c/kg, Charolais heifers at 203c/kg and an overall average of 171c/kg were the highlights of the Elders-Landmark multi-breed heifer sale at Hamilton in the third week of the weaner sales” was the lead quote from Stock & Land.
Some 66,000 steer and heifer weaners are yarded in the weaner sales in Victoria during January each year. Normally steers outsell heifers by around 20c/kg. This year the difference was smaller with an average difference of about 10c/kg.
Not only did these Limousin heifers top the heifer market by a clear margin they also far exceeded the top prices for steers over all sales in the series. The top priced steers were a pen of Herefords which sold for 210.5 c/kg with most selling in the range of 162 to 180c/kg
The two pens of Limousin heifers were offered by the Neeson family who have been long time breeders of commercial Limousin cattle. A pen of 34 Limousin heifers offered by Rod Neeson, “Glenleam” made 226c/kg and a pen of 25 heifers offered by Pat Neeson, “Innisvail” made 224c/kg. They sold to John Magner of Drouin West who is establishing a commercial Limousin breeding herd.
